Inova commemorates a milestone in its hospital project

The future Alexandria Hospital is flanked by an outpatient health center and a cancer center.

Inova Health System and its partners celebrated the ongoing construction of the new Alexandria Hospital at the Landmark Mall site on April 13 with a “topping off” ceremony.

The event featured the placement of the final beam on top of the building. Before a crane lifted the beam, it was signed by Inova officials, members of the Inova Foundation Board, City of Alexandria leaders, state legislators, and representatives of Clark Construction.

People at the topping-off event signed the beam.

The project replaces the old Alexandria Hospital on Seminary Road with a new state-of-the-art healthcare campus with a 192-bed hospital, a cancer center, and an office building for outpatient healthcare.

The new hospital is expected to be completed by the end of 2028.

“When it opens, this will be a hospital second to none anywhere in the country,” said Inova Health System CEO Dr. J. Stephen Jones. “Alexandria Hospital has been the fabric of this community for 150 years. In 2018, it received a grade of A. Now, it’s not a grade-A hospital. We thought we could do better.”

The crane lifts the beam for placement on top of the hospital.

The new campus will offer fully integrated care for cancer patients, and will have a Level 3 trauma center, a Level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, and advanced cardiac, neurosciences, and maternal care. said Dr. Rina Bansal, president of Inova Alexandria Hospital.

The hospital will have lots of natural light and will optimize technology, including AI, to streamline the workflow, added Heather Russell, Inova vice president for operations.

The complex is part of a major mixed-use redevelopment in Alexandria’s West End that will include multifamily housing, townhouses, retail, a new street grid, a fire station, parks, and a transit hub on Duke Street.

Alexandria Vice Mayor Sarah Bagley said the redevelopment project will offer “a network of holistic services, including housing, healthcare, and transit.” And it fits in with the City Council’s priorities, she said, including the goal of reducing disparities by aligning services with community needs.

Also on April 13, Inova held a topping-off ceremony for the new hospital under construction in Springfield. Together, Jones said, both projects reflect Inova’s $2 billion investment in Northern Virginia.

After the new Alexandria Hospital opens, the old one will be torn down to make way for a housing development.
