Jimenez charged with driving 104 mph on Route 50 in Fairfax

Mason Supervisor Andres Jimenez (right) hosted a listening session for Culmore residents in 2024 that focused on public safety, among other issues.

The Fairfax County Traffic Court has provided more details on the reckless driving charge for Mason Supervisor Andres Jimenez.

Jimenez was stopped by a Virginia State trooper for driving 104 miles per hour on Route 50 on May 5.

He was stopped on Fair Lakes Parkway at Monument Drive at 8:49 a.m. That location is close to the Fairfax County Government Center. A Board of Supervisors meeting was held that day, beginning at 9:30 a.m.

While the summons says Jimenez was driving 104 mph in a 70-mph zone, the speed limit on Route 50 near Fair Lakes Drive is 45 mph. A deputy clerk at the Traffic Court could not explain why the summons says “104/70 reckless.”

Under the Virginia Code, a “reckless driving” charge applies to anyone driving in excess of 85 mph or exceeding the speed limit by 20 mph.

According to the summons, Jimenez was driving a 2025 Porsche. He was not given a DWI test.

Jimenez is scheduled to appear at an adjudicatory hearing in Traffic Court, 4110 Chain Bridge Road, Fairfax, Room 1E, on Monday, June 20, at 9:30 a.m.

Sean Kennedy, president of Virginians for Safe Communities, sent a letter to Fairfax County Commonwealth’s Attorney Steve Descano on July 16 asking Descano to immediately recuse himself from any involvement in the prosecution of Jimenez “due to the appearance of a conflict of interest.”

Kennedy asks Descano to “request appointment of an independent special prosecutor from another jurisdiction” to handle the case. Kennedy is an outspoken critic of Descano and the county’s “sanctuary policies.”

According to Kennedy, Jimenez and Descano are political allies with multiple ties. Both Jimenez and his defense attorney, Makan Shirafkan, served on the Justice Advisory Council launched by Descano in 2021. As a Fairfax County supervisor, Jimenez oversees the county budget and makes funding decisions affecting the commonwealth attorney’s office.

“Even if every decision were entirely proper, a reasonable member of the public could question whether political and institutional relationships played a role,” Kennedy said. “That appearance alone undermines public trust.”
