Mason police commander to address street racing complaints

The car show in Annandale on Feb. 25.

Capt. Shawn Adcock, the new commander of the Mason Police Station, is working on addressing the complaints about street racing in Annandale.

Many residents have complained about noise and speeding on Little River Turnpike and surrounding streets after 10 p.m. last week following an informal meetup of car enthusiasts in the parking lot at the new shopping center under construction on John Marr Drive.

“We are currently coordinating with the business owner, our traffic safety division, and the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office to develop a collaborative approach to address these complaints,” Adcock says. “My primary concern is the safety of the community.”

  1. Can no one just mind their business and let people have some fun? I experience more noise in my home from late night sirens and the constant helicopter presence. I do hear the drag racing but it isn't terribly bothersome, I am situated between Columbia Pike and Little River Turnpike. If the police cared, they would do something, the Mason District police station is adjacent to the racing, I know they hear it.

    1. Don't want to ruin their fun, and I get that the parking lot on John Marr is a good meetup spot, just think they should race on less-frequented roads. It's dangerous for those who are not racing to be unwillingly involved.

Ideally racing at night is done at places where business is only conducted during the day, such as industrial parks. Or in more rural areas as well.

    2. Can the people who want to have fun, do it at reasonable hours and not do burnouts in front of my house, or drag race down Columbia Pike? I have no problem leaving people alone, as long as they don't bother me. However, their inconsideration for others makes it everybody's problem. Why can't they do this on Saturday at 10 AM an not on a Thursday at 10 PM?

  2. Two years ago street racers lost control and ran into my yard after hitting a light pole. I went out to check and they were scrambling to put the bumper and car parts in their trunks and drove off. The electricity was out for a day, but they easily could've hit my neighbor's house.

  3. This problem has been pervasive for over 2 months now, I've been reporting it to the West Springfield station since I am in Braddock District. It has woken me up late at night and very early in the morning. I agree the police don't seem to care at all. If they had ANYONE stationed in Annandale on ANY night of the week they would hear it. But since they don't bother enforcing we are left with this relentless noise. It is particularly bad on weekends but not just on weekends. I disagree that this isn't a problem and are just people having some fun. Lots of fun until someone gets killed. What fun that will be.

  4. How hard is it to understand that there are speed limits and noise ordinances and that racing on public streets is unlawful? And how hard is it for the police to patrol, pull over, and ticket the offenders?

  5. How about some of you consider that these people are also drinking in the parking lots and then speeding off on streets that residents are driving on too. Also these people are leaving behind their trash and they are disgusting. If they were civilized it would be a whole different ball game.

  6. So that's where all the racket is from late at night, I was wondering, and I'm pretty far from it too, can't imagine those closer to it. I don't mind folks gathering and talking about their cars (I used to back in the day). But revving engines loud is unnecessary.

  7. I think part of the problem is that it crosses jurisdictions. They fly in from Braddock run up through Mason and cross into Providence. These police apparently can't communicate with each other. From West Springfield, who have to patrol from the Occoquan to Americana & Heritage it's a long haul. So those limitations seem to be allowing this to fester. Enforcement in this county is a joke on EVERY level. Yet they want to create a city without city services. It is an outrage.

  8. Awesome, I'm gonna throw on my speed racer outfit & head on over there in my old Mazda that can peel some serious rubber!

  9. Some people have fun
and some people stick stupid signs and mural in their back yard.

The good part is that the young people are having fun
and the old bigots are the one's diminishing, along with their stupid signs and murals.

  10. Well, that is one of the most enlightened comments I have ever read on the Blog. Signs and murals don't kill. And in the blink of an eye my friend, you will also be diminishing. Particularly if you keep up the drag racing.

    1. I agree. I may not like my neighbor's signs or murals, but at least they don't wake me up in the middle of the night or kill my children when they lose control.

  11. Leave us alone. Where else are we supposed to congregate for underage drinking and drug transactions?

  12. Yeah, it's so funny thinking about the cop who wrote me a ticket for a "no left turn permitted from XX-XXam" violation when I was literally leaving my own neighborhood for work one morning last year.

Why are those the only posted signs deemed worthy of the enforcing? What good does it do public safety? They could sit and speed trap about 100 cars an hour if they just staked out Elmdale between Braddock & Old Columbia Pike. Y'know, something that actually improves safety. So many pedestrians who use the (unprotected by any curb) walking path along the street while drivers barrel by at 40+, bottoming out their suspension on the speed bumps without giving a darn.

The approach seems to be: cash-grab lazy enforcement instead of dealing with real and relevant issues that impact the safety of drivers, pedestrians, and residents.

Why is enforcement of severe speeding in residential areas or street racing on LRT apparently impossible?

Not enough money in street racing enforcement and fines for it to be interesting to the cops?

  13. street racing…im sure involves "speeding" and after hours involves "disturbing the peace" both of which are illegal. it's ridiculous, dangerous, and disturbing. LE should rectified this by now. ION..what's with the constant obnoxiously low flying and constant cirling of helicopters in this Annandale areA almost daily – for the past few years. its not normal, there aint THAt Much crime in thia area warranting low flying helicopters over residential areas like its some war zone. this is fairfax va, not LA. STAY PREPARED …because "they" are obviously preparing for something that they're not telling us. Look up from your phone & pay attention
