Supervisors increase hiring bonuses
The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors on Sept. 13 agreed to offer $15,000 hiring bonuses to attract qualified applicants for certain hard-to-fill jobs.
Those positions include developmental disability support coordinators, emergency service clinicians, nurses, police officers, and sheriff deputies.
Currently, the county executive has the authority to grant hiring bonuses up to $5,000 for these positions.

The bonuses need to be increased to ensure Fairfax County remains competitive with nearby jurisdictions, said board chair Jeffrey McKay. “Hiring incentives can be a valuable tool in attracting the best talent available. We expect this new authority to be in place for very limited positions for a limited time.”
The larger bonuses will be implemented immediately.
While the job categories cited by the board are most critical, job recruiting is challenging across the county. “No one department or agency has been immune from this,” McKay said.
The board also directed the county executive to review other potential incentives, such as revising the pay scale, providing more flexible work schedules, and expanding the bonuses to other positions.
The bonuses will be cut in half by taxes, and the new hires will probably have to pay it back the full amount of they leave within the first 5 or so. Then you get to deal with a public that loathes you, a chief who will throw you under the bus in a second, this board who looks down their noses at you, and Steve Descano who can’t wait to charge you with a crime for doing your job. 15K bonus is an insult.
