Fairfax County activates heat plan

Fairfax County has activated its Heat Plan for today, June 12, in response to the National Weather Service heat advisory in effect from 11 a.m to 8 p.m.
When Fairfax County’s heat plan is activated, cooling centers will be available during normal operating hours for individuals who need relief from the heat.
Cooling centers in the Annandale/Mason District area:
- Minnie Peyton Community Center in Bailey’s Crossroads
- Willson Multicultural Center in Seven Corners
- James Lee Community Center in Falls Church
- Thomas Jefferson Library in Falls Church
- Providence Rec Center in Falls Church
- Human services offices at the Heritage Center in Annandale
- Audrey Moore Rec Center in Annandale
The cooling centers will have bottled water, sunscreen, insect repellent, and body wipes. During extreme heat, facilities may have unexpected closures due to HVAC issues, so verify that the location is open by visiting www.fairfaxcounty.gov/status.
Fairfax County also distributes supplies through outreach workers and other partners who go out into the community to check on unsheltered residents. They also visit shelters, drop-in centers, and meal sites.
Visit the county’s extreme heat resource page for the list of cooling centers and additional information.
Fairfax County Public Schools has canceled all outdoor activities today from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., including recess, co-curricular and extracurricular activities, and recreation programs and community use by outside groups not affiliated with FCPS.
High school athletic team practices and competitions may continue. Decisions will be made by athletic trainers who closely monitor conditions to ensure safety. Visit this page for more information.
Employees whose job function requires outdoor work, such as groundskeepers and warehouse workers, are to complete the remainder of their workday indoors with alternate activities, such as training.
The heat plan has been extended for June 13.
