Moon to run for Braddock supervisor

Ilryong Moon speaks at his campaign launch for the school board in 2023.

At-large school board member Ilryong Moon plans to run for the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, representing the Braddock District.

That seat will be vacant, assuming the current Braddock Supervisor, James Walkinshaw wins a special election on Sept. 9 to fill the 11th District seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Walkinshaw won a Democratic primary on June 28 for the congressional seat formerly occupied by the late Rep. Gerry Connolly. Also on June 28, Stewart Whitson won a Republican primary for that congressional seat.

In a heavily blue district, Walkinshaw is likely to win.

“Once James goes to Congress, the Braddock District community will then need to elect someone to succeed him as supervisor. I plan to run for that seat,” Moon announced on the DC Urban Moms and Dads forum. Other candidates are expected to surface, as well.

“Having lived in the Braddock District since 1987 and raised both of my sons here, I have a profound love for this community and want to ensure that it remains a great place to live, work, and raise a family,” Moon wrote. “I will bring my 30 years of public service and dedication to that mission.”

Moon represented the Braddock District on the school board from 1996 to 1999. He was an at-large member of the board from 2004 to 2019, serving two terms as chair.

He was re-elected as an at-large member of the school board in November 2023.

  1. My comment is about content in general. Seems Annandale Today used to be more ” community ” oriented , but I have noticed a shift in more political , governmental stories not discounting the need for those too . It’s just I really looked forward to knowing what was going on in the area be it good or bad not just governmental issues . Would like to see a shift back to more of what’s happening in the surrounding areas.

    1. Political stories ARE community stories. Why? Because the things that happen politically, directly impact our community! Take for example the food tax that was recently passed. That was a political issue because it is a policy that will govern (dictate) how much we ultimately pay for our food. And how much we pay for our food impacts how much money we will each have left over for other goods & services. This in turns impacts how we interact with our community because we need money to do things within the community. If you need another example… the BoS recently approved an amendment to the Comprehensive Plan (a political act) to allow an office building on Little River Tpk to be converted into residential apartments. This will directly impact the number of available living spaces in our community. This will impact who gets to live in our community. In both cases, political decisions have directly influenced the kinds of people who will be living in our community and the kinds of decisions that will be made by people in the community. I hope this makes sense to you and others who are reading.

      1. It does. Everything is connected, though I can relate to wanting to ignore politics sometimes.

    1. In 2023 Fairfax County had the lowest violent crime rate of jurisdictions in the United States of the same size with 1255 violent crimes. Montgomery County roughly the same size had nearly double that number of violent crimes. Philadelphia, slightly larger, had over 15,000 violent crimes in 2023.

      1. In my universe where every Democrat leaves Fairfax County – it would be Nirvana…Almost zero crime; student’s learning to read and write and not that johnny can be a girl; students advanced based on merit and hard work; low taxes; not worrying that some dude pretending to be a girl whips out his junk in my granddaughter’s locker room…no more lazy losers wanting free crap that I must pay for…no more bike lanes that no one uses….no more “get an experimental shot” or lose your job…that Henry – is my alternate universe…you know what’s sad Henry – you just don’t get it – here’s a fact – the Democrat party is less popular now than Elon Musk – but you can’t fix stupid – so goes Fairfax. – Mic drop – moving van is leaving – good luck to good people remaining in the new shit hole that is Fairfax!
