Three Mason District schools to receive additional resources

A new Fairfax County Public Schools program will target additional funds to about 30 underperforming elementary and middle schools to help them raise student achievement over the next three years. Schools in the Mason District expected to part of the Priority Schools program are Beech Tree Elementary School and Poe and Glasgow middle schools.

Each Priority School will be given preference in hiring the best teachers and will receive additional funding to create professional learning communities and to implement intervention strategies, such as giving teachers additional planning time, hiring an instructional coach, or providing preschool for 4-year-olds. Principals will receive leadership training through the University of Virginia’s turnaround specialist program, beginning this summer. Each school also will be assigned a district support team to review academic achievement data, measure progress, and recommend additional resources.

FCPS has shifted $1.3 million from the central office to fund the Priority Schools program.

  1. Do you know if the county removed the resource officer from the local Annandale/Falls Church schools as part of the budget cuts?

    Thx

  2. The budget adopted by the Board of Supervisors April 27 restored the school resources officers.

  3. Thanks for the update on the resource officers. You have a good blog by the way, nice info on Annandale, please keep it up, I don't always agree with you (grin) but the information is great.

    Cheers

  4. More of my tax dollars poured into a school system that needs to get back to basics and instill discipline. The number of interruptions per day in these schools is ridiculous because teachers have no power to deal with kids who are disruptive. We should be charging these parents a flat fee for each interruption to pay for this.
