Volunteers pack backpacks for students

Volunteers participate in the Great Assembly.

Nearly 100 volunteers gathered at the Arlington Moose Lodge in Bailey’s Crossroads Aug. 6 to put together 2,000 backpacks full of school supplies for students in the Justice High School pyramid.

Half of the backpacks will go to Justice High School and Glasgow Middle School; the rest will go to elementary schools, said Kate Walter, community services chair at the Bailey’s Crossroads Rotary Club.

In addition to Rotarians, the Great Assembly drew volunteers from the Moose Lodge and Lions Club and teachers from Justice High School. The Moose Lodge hosted a cookout for volunteers afterward.

Walter said the Rotary Club used $9,000 from its annual Mustang raffle to purchase the school supplies.

Volunteers will drop the backpacks off at schools this week. School counselors will distribute them to students.
