All Amazon Fresh stores will close

Amazon Fresh opened in Bailey’s Crossroads just over a year ago.

Amazon plans to close all Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go stores, the company announced Jan. 27. Some of those stores will be converted to Whole Foods.

There are nine Amazon Fresh stores in the D.C. area, including one in the Crossroads Center in Bailey’s Crossroads that opened in December 2024.

The reason for closing Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go stores, the company says, is because “we haven’t yet created a truly distinctive customer experience with the right economic model needed for large-scale expansion.” Amazon doesn’t provide a timeline for closing stores.

A company spokesperson told the Washington Business Journal that each Amazon Fresh store will be evaluated for potential conversion “based on multiple factors.” The goal is to “optimize our physical retail footprint by placing Whole Foods Market stores where they’ll best serve customers and perform well.”

  1. No one wanted to shop a completely humanless experience (plus scanners & self checkout are available at Giant for the most introverted). Then adding checkout services made them just like other stores. The store at Bailey’s Crossroads is probably the size for the Whole Foods Daily Shop, but ALDI already does this better in tbe same neighborhood. The only thing different Whole Foods has to offer is it’s homeopathic/natural remedies section.

    1. I really liked shopping there. Using the dash cart was pretty easy for me and eliminated surprise totals at checkout plus no standing in line. The prices were consistently good, at least for my regular items

  2. There’s no way this location will be converted to a Whole Foods so this will go back to being a vacant building for who knows how long. This is bad news for the community.

    1. They most certainly wouldn’t move a Whole Foods into that location, but Whole foods was a lot less…high end than I remember the last couple of times that I went. Prices for basics were reasonable. There was Coors Light in the beer section, and I saw other mainstream brands being sold as well. Their bakery and hot and prepared foods are excellent, though.

  3. I went to three Amazon Fresh stores in the past three years and none of them impressed me enough to be my default store. I ended up getting pizza from the hot bar but for regular shopping, I stuck to my regular stores.

Hope this store (Bailey’s) does convert to a whole foods…each area needs a variety of grocery stores to offer multiple choices for consumers.

  4. Oh I loved going to Amazon fresh . Was so convenient for me , I’m going to miss it . I hope they will convert to a Whole Foods as Baileys really has no health food options other than maybe some of Trader Joe’s . Back in 70’s and 80’s little health food stores were everywhere . But really couldn’t compete with big box stores because of small size .So please please Amazon you already have the building please turn it into a Whole Foods !

  5. Oh no, I shop at Baileys Crossroads store on a weekly basis. Love the food, the convenience and delivery service. Can’t beat the price and quality Amazon offers. This is not good news!

  6. I will miss out baileys store. Great prices and good for returns. The produce was fresh but they could not keep their shelves stocked. Amazon over reached and did a terrible job of managing this offshoot brand. If you like eating junk, Aldis is your store. Just read the labels and the pathetic produce that’s days old. Plus they removed the self check out. It’s a corporate bodega w no quality control!
